The match between Montpellier and Marseille, which took place on October 20 last at the Mosson Stadium, was marked by serious incidents that overshadowed the sporting event. Hooded supporters created a panic atmosphere in the stands, raising concerns about safety at sporting events in Ligue 1.
Alarming incidents in the stands
During the match where Montpellier was largely defeated by Marseille (5-0), the atmosphere in the stadium quickly turned into a nightmare. Despite the decision made by the Prefect of Hérault to leave the visitor section empty, several Marseille supporters still managed to enter the stands, exacerbating the already present tensions.
In the Mediterranean stand, the majority of the spectators supported the Phocaean team, celebrating the goals scored loudly. However, the festive atmosphere was brutally interrupted. In the 41st minute, about fifty hooded individuals surged into the stands, clearly seeking to cause trouble.
An overwhelmed security and families in distress
Faced with this sudden intrusion, the security agents appeared overwhelmed. Many families present in the stadium experienced a sense of panic. The children, visibly worried, began to cry, while some spectators desperately sought protection by taking refuge in the stands.
Witnesses reported that violent exchanges took place, indicating a climate of violence rarely observed in Ligue 1 matches. This situation prompted several supporters from both teams to leave the stadium before it ended, fearing they would encounter problems at the exit.
A call for immediate measures
At the end of the event, several fans reported that hooded individuals were monitoring spectators to detect those hiding OM jerseys under their clothes. This threat significantly contributed to the general anxiety felt during and after the match.
Bruno Retailleau firmly condemned these incidents, and discussions are scheduled between the Minister of the Interior and football authorities to examine preventive solutions and ensure the safety of supporters during future matches.
